This tune was born when a guitar student of mine inadvertently played a major third instead of a minor one in an old-time fiddle tune I had transcribed called Cousin Sally Brown. It's amazing, sometimes, what the change just one note can do to a melody. In this case, what started solidly in Appalachia finished up over in India somewheres. Amazing. Many thanks to young fingerstyler Severin Victor for that happy accident.
In the story-line of the Ten-In-One CD, this is the music that our protagonist Mr. Oster hears as he enters the sideshow tent. Strangely enough, (nudge-nudge) just moments before he had been listening to buskers play the analogous old-time fiddle tune outside the front gate.
This arrangement features frequent Bill Frisell collaborator Hank Roberts on cello, album producer Walter Strauss on duet guitar and keyboard genius Kit Walker on loops and percussion.
Stop on by the No Depression website, give a listen, and check out the scene over ther. Very hip, I think you'll agree..
